What comes in, what goes out, and what is left of the month

A month has two sides and you type both of them: the lines that bring money in, each with the amount for this one month, and the lines that take it out, each with its own. No figure of your month on this page is ours - no category, no suggested line, no split, no amount and no total of our own - and nothing you type leaves your machine. Type both sides and each one is footed and the difference between the two feet is printed either way, with the arithmetic beside it; until each side foots to a positive amount, nothing here is computed at all. It tells the month's 6 states apart: neither side footed to a positive amount, only the income side footed, only the category side footed, something left over, the two sides footing to the same figure, and a month that is short.

Neither side foots to a positive amount yet, so no figure here is computed: this page waits until both sides do.

Every row here is a line you typed, labelled with your own name for it, or by its position where you typed an amount and no name. No amount on a line you are showing is left out: an amount with no name is footed on its side like every other. Choose fewer lines on a side and the rows past that count are put away, with the amounts on them no longer footed.

DThe working

Once each side foots to a positive amount, each side is added up on its own and then one foot is taken off the other, and the whole of the arithmetic is printed here in full, character for character, so you can re-do it on paper. Until then this block is empty, because a month with one side still at nothing has no arithmetic to print. An amount typed to a third decimal is read to the cent, and the cent is the figure added.

EWhat this page will not tell you

This page computes and never recommends. It supplies no list of categories, no suggested line, no default split, no percentage of anything, no rule of any kind and no figure of your month that did not come from you; it does not order anything you owe, set one line against another, or say what a month ought to look like. It reports two totals and the difference between them, and it stops there.

Nothing is stored between visits, and nothing you type - no name, no amount, no total - is sent anywhere. The page itself reports to otherworldlabs.com that it was opened, with this page's address, a one-visit identifier and the site you came from, and then that the workbook block was seen and that the buy link was clicked; no figure of your month goes with any of them. No field here asks for an institution, an account, a balance or a credential. The arithmetic is also published as JSON, with the formulas, the six states and two worked months, at api.json.

FThe monthly budget workbook

The workbook is this month in a spreadsheet, and next month beside it: your line names typed once down the side, each one on its own side of the month, with a column of amounts for every month across. Every total in it is a live formula with no pasted value, so a column foots itself as soon as the amounts are in, the month before it is still there to read, and nothing has to be typed twice. It carries no category list of its own and no row that asks for an account.
